"SEEING YOURSELF AS GOD SEES YOU"
“We…saw giants…we felt like grasshoppers.” Numbers 13:33 NLT
TEN OF Israel’s twelve spies returned from the Promised Land saying, “We…saw giants …we felt like grasshoppers.” The other two, Joshua and Caleb, saw the same giants but believed that with God’s help they could be conquered: “Let us go up at once and possess it…for we are well able” (v. 30 TLB). That’s the language of a winner! Understand this: God has a plan for your life, but you’ll never fulfill it until you come into agreement with His Word. “But I have so many problems. How could God use someone like me?” you ask. Paul said, “I don’t mean to say that I have already…reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me” (Philippians 3:12 NLT). When God uses imperfect people, it makes us realize that He alone is our source, our strength, our strategy, and the secret to our success. The Bible says, “The foolish thing [that has its source in] God is wiser than men, and the weak thing [that springs] from God is stronger than men” (1 Corinthians 1:25 AMPC). You have a God-ordained destiny, and no excuse for not fulfilling it. You can’t use weakness as a defense, for God says, “My strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). You can’t use your past as an excuse, for God says, “Old things are passed away…all things are become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17). How God sees you isn’t the problem; it’s how you see yourself that keeps you from succeeding! So ask God to give you a new understanding of how He sees you—loved, righteous, blessed, and favoured!

"HOW TO HELP PEOPLE"
“What I do have I give you.” Acts 3:6 NIV
THE BIBLE says, “Peter said, ‘Look at us…Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.’ Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong” (vv. 4-7 NIV). Peter did three things you must do if you want to help people: (1) Get their attention. Peter told this incapacitated man, “Look at us” (v. 4 NIV). Hurting people are often so distracted by their pain, their past experiences, and their future fears, that in order to get through to them you must first get their attention. Why? Because faith must be focused if it’s to be effective. (2) Introduce them to the name that’s greater than their problem. That name is “Jesus,” and it’s greater than every sickness and situation. Rehab centers confirm that a relatively small percentage of people stay free from their addiction. That’s the bad news. Now here’s the good news: The name of Jesus is stronger than every addiction! “At the name of Jesus every knee should bow” (Philippians 2:10). So introduce those who are hurting to Jesus! (3) Give them a hand up. As Peter pulled the man up, “immediately [his] feet and ankle bones received strength” (Acts 3:7). Because he’d been in the same condition for thirty-eight years, he needed help to get up. And there are people around you who need help to get up too. They need someone to pull them out of their despair and get them to Jesus, and God can use you to be that someone.

Theme: End the conflict now!
Friday 22 February, 2019
Text: ‘Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all sins.' Proverbs 10:12 NKJV
When you hold on to resentment it feels like there’s a war going on inside you. You’re in a battle with yourself, as well as others. And the more you fight, the more ground you lose. Arguing just drains you of energy and leaves you more hurt and angry. You’re in a no-win situation. You struggle with who’s right and who’s wrong. You spend so much time trying to out-do, out-shout, and out-manoeuvre others that you lose your peace and joy. End the conflict now! Refuse to live this way another day. Don’t allow someone’s actions to determine your reactions. ‘Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour’ (1 Peter 5:8 NIV 1984 Edition). Don’t become Satan’s next meal. Let the love and peace of God fill your mind so much that it overflows to others – including those who have upset you. Stop and think: do you really want to be like the person who hurt you? What would Jesus do? You know! He’d turn the other cheek (see Matthew 5:39). ‘But,’ you ask, ‘what about the wrong done to me?’ What about it? It’s not for you to impose judgment. There’s only one qualified judge; let Him handle it (see James 4:12). Ask God to help you to release your anger, turn the other cheek, and forgive the one who has done you wrong. Pray this simple prayer: ‘Lord, I’m angry. Help me to let it go. I choose to be merciful. Thank You for giving me the grace to forgive the person who hurt me and to follow You. In Jesus’ name: amen.’

BE SECURE IN WHO YOU ARE
‘We have different gifts, according to the grace given us.' Romans 12:6 NIV
Insecure people often say yes, when in reality they’d like to say no. But people who succeed at being themselves don’t let others control them. They see themselves as God sees them; therefore they’re led by His Word instead of the fear of rejection. You can invest so much effort into trying to keep everybody happy that you end up losing yourself. Question: Do you feel like you can’t be everything everybody wants you to be? Do you want to say no, but the fear of displeasing others makes you keep complying? And in the meantime the pressure is building inside you and you’re thinking, ‘I can’t do this anymore’? Don’t get angry with those who keep making more and more demands on you. You are responsible for ordering your own life. The buck stops with you! That requires a clear sense of your own worth, your calling, your direction, your goals, and your priorities. One Christian author writes: ‘For years I lived under the pressure of everybody’s expectations. I thought, “What if I let them down?” I thought they were pressuring me, when in reality it was my own fears and insecurities weighing me down. “But,” you say, “don’t you care what others think?” What others think isn’t my problem, unless I make it my problem. Pleasing God and being what He wants is my first concern. If I try to be anybody else I’ll forfeit His blessing, because God can’t bless an imitation.’ The solution is to work on becoming secure in who you are in Christ, and everything else will begin to fall into place.

"THE HOLY SPIRIT—THE PLUS FACTOR"
“The Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name.” John 14:26 NIV
WHY WOULD we describe the Holy Spirit as the plus factor? Three reasons: (1) The Holy Spirit determines the gifts and skills you receive. “It is the one and only [Holy] Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have” (1Corinthians 12:11 NLT). So if you feel like a square peg in a round hole, ask the Holy Spirit to show you what your gifts are. Then ask Him to open the door and give you favour with the right people. He’ll do it. (2) The Holy Spirit knows where you belong. The Bible says, “They, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia” (Acts 13:4). Where you are matters. For example, if you’re a whale you were born to swim in the ocean. If you’re a bird you were born to fly in the air. During a famine God sent Elijah to the brook Cherith, saying, “I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there” (1Kings 17:4). If Elijah had decided he’d rather stay where he was, he’d have missed his miracle. You don’t have to do anything to experience God’s love, but you must know His voice and follow His direction to experience His blessing. (3) The Holy Spirit can be offended. “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit” (Ephesians 4:30 NIV). When a dove (which represents the Holy Spirit in Scripture) returns to its nest, it won’t land if the nest is out of order. So ask God to make you more conscious of the presence of His precious Holy Spirit, and make your heart a place where He always feels at home.

Theme: Get better acquainted with God
Monday 25 February, 2019
Trxt: ‘Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.’ Job 22:21 KJV
Here are two things that happen when you recognise God’s greatness: 1) You’re not tempted to analyse Him and reduce Him to manageable terms. 2) You’re less likely to try and manipulate Him and His will, or explain Him and His ways. Think carefully about that for a moment! How many times does God have to tell us, ‘So are my ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts’ (Isaiah 55:9 NKJV) before we actually get it? How often must He explain that He’s the shepherd and we’re the sheep; that He’s the vine and we’re branches, before we kneel down in surrender and say, ‘Have thine own way, Lord’? If Jesus, the Son of God, found it necessary to pray, ‘Not my will but thine be done,’ wouldn’t it be wise for us to pray those words too – every day? (See Matthew 26:39.) How long has it been since you took time just to sit silently in His presence; to catch a glimpse of the One who is truly awesome and incomprehensible? Job 22:21 says, ‘Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.’ Do you know God? If so, how well do you know Him? Would you like to know Him better? If your answer is yes, it won’t just happen. You must put it at the top of your priority list and pursue it each day. When you do, you won’t be disappointed because His Word guarantees you: ‘Draw near to God and He will draw near to you’ (James 4:8 NKJV).

"DON’T ENTERTAIN WRONG THOUGHTS"
“Guard your heart…for it determines the course of your life.” Proverbs 4:23 NLT
WHEN SATAN sets out to destroy you, he starts by planting wrong thoughts in your mind. Jesus illustrated this when He said, “The law of Moses said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say: Anyone who even looks at a woman with lust in his eye has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matthew 5:27-28 TLB). Before you surrender to sin in reality, you entertain it as fantasy. Evil thoughts aren’t really yours until you allow them to “move in and rearrange the furniture.” Left unchecked to ramble through your mind, a thought can attach itself to an incident in your past or a proclivity in your present and feed on it until it’s like a tumor growing inside you. Paul warns, “Take captive every thought…make it obedient to Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV). And Solomon writes, “Guard your heart…for it determines the course of your life.” Don’t give wrong thoughts an inch or they will take a mile. Evict them before they weaken your commitment to Christ and leave you in the place of regret. Generally speaking, when we clean house we focus on what others can see and inspect. Imagine how much mental junk we collect because we think nobody sits in our heads examining our thoughts. But God does! David said, “Lord…you know all about me” (Psalm 139:1 CEV). Knowing that should lead you to pray: “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord” (Psalm 19:14).

"YOU’RE PART OF THE FAMILY"
“In love he predestined us for adoption.” Ephesians 1:4-5 NIV
WE ALL have a need to belong, to be part of a family. One pastor writes: “I know couples with hearts of love who yearn to focus it on some little one, but no little one arrives. When these couples find children to adopt, they don’t tell the children they’d better measure up to expectation if they want to stay in the family. There’s no such thing as three strikes—then back to the agency. No, they accept them with open arms and joy-filled hearts because they love them. They take them into their homes forever, give them the family name, and make them legal heirs. Long before we even knew we needed God, He “predestined us to adoption as sons [and daughters] by Jesus Christ” (NKJV). Earthly parents get divorced, go separate ways, and start new families. But not God; you never have to worry about your standing and relationship with Him. Regardless of race, colour, creed, or background, when you repent and accept Christ as your Savior, your adoption becomes binding and permanent. You’re part of His family. And to prove it, “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God” (Romans 8:16 NKJV). Do you realize what that means? You never again have to walk around feeling intimidated and fearful, or live under a cloud of condemnation, because you are a child of God and a “fellow [heir] with Christ” (v. 17 NAS). The word “heir” means you can claim every blessing and benefit Christ purchased for you at the cross. Every single one without exception!

"HOW TO DEAL WITH DEPRESSION"
“For I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” Psalm 42:5 NIV
SOME OF the godliest people in the Bible and in church history battled depression. Job experienced it through the back-to-back losses of his children, his wealth, and his health. Moses “spoke face to face [with God] as a man speaks to his friend” (Exodus 33:11 NKJV). Yet the pressures of leading Israel overwhelmed him to the point of despair. Elijah conquered the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, and afterwards became so depressed that he wanted to die. Charles Haddon Spurgeon, one of the greatest preachers who ever lived, called depression “the black dog” that followed him all his life. Depression, in some form, will touch each of us at some point in life. Long-term depression takes longer to get over. But the longest road in the world is shorter when you take the first step, and that step is turning to God. Whether your depression is caused by the pressures of responsibility like Moses, or by losing things you love like Job, or feeling drained on the heels of a great success like Elijah, you must turn to the Great Physician and let Him make you whole. It’s what the psalmist did: “My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you” (Psalm 42:6 NIV). David doesn’t deny his emotions; he expresses them to God in prayer. “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me?” (v. 11 NIV). But he doesn’t stop there. He says, “Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” Notice, depression lifts and hope returns when you begin to praise God and trust His goodness.

"YOU MUST HAVE INTEGRITY"
“We are taking pains to do what is right.” 2 Corinthians 8:21 NIV
THERE’S A cartoon depicting some hogs feeding while the farmer is busy filling their trough up to the brim. Overhead in bold letters a sign reads, “Premium Bacon Company.” In the cartoon one hog says to the others, “Have you ever wondered why the farmer is so good to us?” Question: Do people have to wonder about your motives? They shouldn’t! The apostle Paul defines integrity like this: “In honour preferring one another” (Romans 12:10). Integrity always seeks the good of others. It believes that if something isn’t good for both sides, it’s not good for either side. Solomon warns, “Exploit the poor or glad-hand the rich—whichever, you’ll end up the poorer for it” (Proverbs 22:16 TM). If you want to test the depth of your integrity, consider these questions: How transparent are you with others? How well do you treat people from whom you have nothing to gain? Do you assume different personas depending on who you’re with? Do you put others ahead of your own personal agenda? Do you love people and use things, or love things and use people? Do you make difficult decisions even when it costs you personally? When you have something to say about somebody, do you talk to them or talk about them? Are you accountable to anybody other than yourself? These are important questions, so take time to consider them prayerfully. And remember, you may succeed momentarily because of what you know or do, but you’ll only succeed permanently because of what you are.

"SHOW SOME “CLASS”"
“Demetrius is well spoken of by everyone—and even by the truth itself.”
3 John v12 NIV
WHEN PEOPLE speak well of you, it means you have acceptance. But when the truth speaks well of you, it means you have class! Demetrius had it. Do you? Paul told Timothy, “Set an example…in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity…give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress” (1Timothy 4:12-15 NIV). We decided to reprint these timeless words on “class” by columnist Ann Landers: “Class is just confidence dressed in humility. It keeps its word, its temper, and its friends. It has a steady eye, a steady nerve, a steady tongue, and steady habits. It’s silent when it has nothing to say, thoughtful when it judges, and is always first to make amends when it’s wrong. Class doesn’t run scared. It’s surefooted, committed, and handles whatever comes along. Class has a sense of humour. It knows that a good laugh is often the best lubricant for oiling the machinery of human relations. Class never makes excuses. It takes its lumps, learns from its mistakes, and becomes wiser. Class knows that courtesy and good manners are nothing more than a series of small sacrifices. It bespeaks an aristocracy that is not dependent on ancestors or money. A blue-blood can be totally without it, while the son of a Welsh coal miner may ooze it out of every pore. Class can walk with kings, yet still keep its virtue; talk with crowds, yet still maintain the common touch. Everyone is comfortable with a person who has class—because they are comfortable with themselves.” Today, show some “class!”

"CELEBRATE YOUR PROGRESS!"
“Be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude].” Romans 12:2 AMPC
LASTING CHANGE doesn’t come through human effort, frustration, self-hatred, guilt, or beating yourself up over your failures. It comes from having your mind renewed daily by the Word of God. If you’re a consistent Bible reader, you’ll grow spiritually. As you agree with God and believe what He says in His Word, you gradually begin to change. It just happens. You start to think differently, talk differently, and act differently. But you must be patient because it’s a process that develops in stages. And you must learn to enjoy life while you’re going through the transformation process. Many of us look like we’re walking a tightrope rather than a pathway of peace. No, enjoy where you are on your way to where you’re going! Don’t waste all your “now time” trying to rush into the future. Jesus said that tomorrow will have challenges of its own (See Matthew 6:34). Perhaps you’re thinking, “If only I didn’t have this problem, I’d be happy.” What are you wrestling with? An out-of-control appetite? Resentment? Fearfulness? Maybe you’re saying, “If I could get this habit under control I’d be fine.” Just like Israel conquered the Promised Land one city at a time, you conquer your weaknesses one day at a time. Paul said, “So that I might finish my course with joy” (Acts 20:24). Paul wanted to be all that God called him to be—but he wanted to enjoy the process. So instead of getting discouraged about how far you still have to go, learn to celebrate your progress along the way.

"ACT ON YOUR SPIRITUAL INTUITION"
“Your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’” Isaiah 30:21 NIV
HOW MANY times has something inside urged you to do a certain thing, but instead you allowed the voice in your head to overrule the voice in your spirit? That inner voice is your spiritual intuition, the part of you God speaks to. The Bible says, “Your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’” John the apostle put it this way: “You have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things” (1 John 2:20 NKJV). Learn to trust that “anointing” because it will tell you: (a) what you need to do; (b) when you need to act; (c) what direction to take; (d) what changes you need to make. What a gift—yet we seldom use it! Somebody said, “Too much analysis leads to paralysis.” We’re afraid we couldn’t possibly know something without thinking it through, or because it seems too obvious. We think, “That can’t be right. I couldn’t possibly do that.” We argue for our limitations, and as a result they become our limitations! Learn to recognize and trust your spiritual intuition. It’s your connection to the greatest source of wisdom in the universe—God’s wisdom. And don’t be surprised when what you hear in your spirit sounds like what you’ve thought many times but paid no attention to. The Bible says, “It is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose” (Philippians 2:13 NIV). So next time your spiritual intuition tells you something and it lines up with Scripture, don’t be afraid to act on it!

Theme: The God factor on your job
Tuesday 05 MARCH, 2019
Text: ‘We are labourers together with God.’ 1 Corinthians 3:9 KJV
The biggest plus factor you can have on your job is the God factor. Paul writes, ‘We are labourers together with God.’ Consider these three powerful words: ‘together with God’. A surgeon in a large city hospital had a habit of insisting on a few minutes alone before he performed an operation. He had an outstanding reputation, and one of the young doctors who worked with him wondered if there might be a correlation between this habit of spending time alone and the man’s success. He asked the surgeon about it and he answered, ‘Yes. Before each operation I ask the Great Physician to guide my hands in their work. There have been times when I didn’t know what to do next in a surgery, and then came the power to go on – power I knew came from God. I would not think of performing an operation without asking His help.’ The surgeon’s words quickly spread through the hospital, then across the country. One day a father brought his daughter to the hospital, insisting that the only doctor he would allow to touch her was ‘the one who worked with God’. The Bible says, ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths’ (Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV). Note, it doesn’t say don’t ‘use’ your understanding – it says don’t ‘lean’ on it. Instead, lean on God. ‘Acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.’ If you want success on the job, this is a proven formula for achieving it.

"WHAT WE’LL DO IN HEAVEN"
“To depart and be with Christ…is better by far.” Philippians 1: 23 NIV
IMAGINE BOARDING a plane for your dream vacation when suddenly the pilot announces, “Welcome aboard. After take-off we’ll serve you a wonderful meal and do all we can to make your flight enjoyable. However, I need to tell you—we have no destination. That’s right; we’re just going to keep flying until we run out of fuel and drop into the ocean.” No matter how wonderful the journey is, what’s the point if there’s no destination? God’s Word says, “If our hope in Christ is only for this life, we are more to be pitied than anyone in the world” (1 Corinthians 15:19 NLT). Thank God there’s more! It’s called heaven. And it’s “better by far” than anything we’ve experienced in this life. If you’re wondering what we’ll do when we get there, the Bible says we’ll serve the Lord (See Revelation 22:3). You won’t be issued a halo, a long woolly robe, and a harp, and be assigned to sit on a cloud and strum for all eternity. No, we’ll each serve the Lord in different capacities. Think of it: no midlife crisis, no downsizing, and no burnout. On earth we fail, we get tired, we get frustrated, and our motives are mixed. But not there! Can you imagine serving the One you love most, doing the thing you enjoy most, and doing it in a body that’s forever energized? That’s heaven! And the ultimate bliss will be seeing Jesus face to face. “I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness” (Psalm 17:15).
